About us

About Obaatan Pa

Obaatan Pa Women’s Hospital (OBP) was founded by Dr. Amelia Laing and Dr. Cyril Ofori who are graduates of the University of Ghana. It was formed as a response to many stories of avoidable tragic outcomes around women’s health and childbearing in Ghana. Its main objective is to positively affect health outcomes for women in Ghana.

The unit was opened 10 years ago and comprised of an outpatient department, in house pharmacy and the inpatient facility with 7 beds ( 3 x 2 bed rooms, plus a VIP room). In the last 10 years,, a fully functioning laboratory, an administration block and 3 private rooms have been added to meet the demands of our growing clientele.

The main objective of OBP is to create a model healthcare facility for women, with high-quality, affordable care, offered in a clean environment, with dignity afforded to all who are served. A key part of is to provide care to a proportion of women who could otherwise not afford such care, and to offer support to local midwives as they are the ones who perform most of the obstetric deliveries in Ghana.

Serving Women In Ghana

OBP is a Women's Hospital started by Drs. Amelia Laing and Cyril Ofori and provides care to women from various walks of life. We try to keep our pricing competitive with other Private facilities and subsidize care for local women with financial need.  Financial contributions by the Not For Profit Organisation Serving Women In Ghana, registered in the United States, are used to supplement funds provided by patient payments, to run the Hospital. It was established in 2013.

Our Impact

Since its inception in 2013, Obaatan Pa women’s Hospital has provided antenatal and Gynecologic care to over 4000 women at our facility, and delivered over 850 babies. What makes us unique is that we do not only serve those who can afford our full charges, but have developed a relationship with the nearby village of Shiashie community, to encourage them to receive their Women’s care and deliver their babies with us at discounted prices.

We have organized many free outreach programs for the public, screening for women’s conditions such as Cervical and breast cancer as well as general screens for Hypertension, Diabetes and obesity. These programs have given service to another 2000 women. We always provide Health education on subjects of relevance at such events. Except for during the time of COVID there have been 3 or 4 such Outreach programs each year.  We encouraged the formation of a Health Club provided health education for a local Vocational school.

Since delayed and inadequate management of emergencies is a significant risk factor affecting health outcomes, OBP staff undergo mandatory periodic training in continuing medical education (CME) in obstetric management and neonatal resuscitation.

As at June 2023 over 850 deliveries have been performed at Obaatan Pa and several hundred gynaecologic surgeries. Many women who have benefitted would normally not be able to afford care at a private facility.

The Obaatan Pa Women’s Hospital has contributed to providing life-altering care to a number of women who would otherwise not have received this level of care, or enjoyed a good outcome. We are making our contribution towards reducing Maternal and Infant mortality rates in Ghana by offering, accessible, affortable and high-quality healthcare services to women.
